The Penguin Podcast: Science feat. Michael Pollan, Rick Yancey and Stephen Emmott
In this episode we are going to demonstrate how everything we know can all be explained with the help of scientific research and theories. From the facts about dieting to the processes of cooking; from analysing the digital impact on society to the future of material science; and from alien invasions to the apocalypse, our incredible line-up of scientists, authors and books have it covered.
First of all, we take a look at football statistics with Chris Anderson and David Sally, authors of The Numbers Game. Whilst analysing statistical data has long been used in American sports, it is something of a revolution in the Football world. In this interview clip, Penguin digital marketer and football fanatic, Paul Martinovic, asked Chris and David about the subtitle “Why everything you know about football is wrong” and whether they were ultimately trying to change the landscape of football. The full interview is on SoundCloud (http://soundcloud.com/penguin-books/the-numbers-game-interview) if you want to hear more.
Next we have two influential scientists - Mark Miodownik and Adam Rutherford - whose books Stuff Matters and Creation analyse life and the material world from it’s origins all the way to modern inventions and beyond. Together they compare their theories to scrutinise which materials will shape our future and answer difficult questions such as, “Is concrete a living organism?”
We then have a shocking message from Stephen Emmott, telling us why time is running out for humanity unless we radically change our behaviour. This is the subject of his widely acclaimed stage performance and book of the same name Ten Billion.
Following this we have the diet plan that trumps all other diet plans in Samantha Logan's book The 5:2 Fast Diet Cookbook. In this reading of the book you will discover that by targeting your body's metabolism through fasting two days a week it is easy to lose weight. We've also included a recipe for a delicious low-calorie breakfast.
Evgeny Morozov joins us next to talk about his latest book To Save Everything, Click Here, wherein he examines how we are relying on technology for too many of life’s social, political and personal decisions.
Next Michael Pollan, author of Cooked,is on a mission to get everyone cooking again rather than relying on processed food. In this short clip from an interview with the editor of the Great Food series Pen Vogler, he gives us an insight into some of the science that goes on in cooking. If you want to hear more about what Michael has to say on this topic, you can listen to the full interview on SoundCloud (http://soundcloud.com/penguin-books/interview-with-michael-pollan).
Finally to end this episode, we enter the world of science-fiction and alien invasions. Scientists have confirmed there is life outside earth and the likelihood of human-like civilisations. For years films and books have depicted alien invasions, most of them ending with humankind triumphing over these inter-galactic intruders. But author Rick Yancey has written a much more frightening story in his book The 5th Wave with an alien invasion so horrifying that it appears that many of us wouldn’t survive.
